Winners of the August contest:
First place: Child of the other Side
Second place: Remus
Third place: Smoky/Tarantallegra

Hello everybody and welcome to a new English Poetry Contest!
This challenge will be organized every month, by Marlie (Child of the other side) and Charlotte (Sweet Hermione).

The idea is very simple. We decide the subject, you write the poem. (And of course, we’ll try to make an entry as well.) This can be anything that’s inspiring; another poem, a lyric, a title, a picture, a word, etc. We’ll try to vary the subject as much as possible.

Every participant has to maintain the following rules
    - You are not allowed to write more than one poem per contest
    - The poem must be yours
    - The poem must have something to do with the subject. Please write a few words above/below your poem to tell us a little about it (just like you usually do)
    - Don’t comment on other people, you can do that via the pb-button or during the voting
    - Don’t make your poem too long, 5 pages about one subject is boring
    - Let someone beta it. There are many beta-readers on HPF and Cotos, TONKS and SH are willing to assist people who do want to compete but are not that good in English. With the right words your poem reads a lot easier. Don’t be ashamed just pb
    - You must send your poem to SH or to Cotos; you’re no longer allowed to post it by yourself

About the voting.
    - Don’t vote for yourself nor before SH or I give permission. If you do your vote won't count
    - Explain with more then 15 words why you’ve chosen a certain poem. “I love it” won’t do
    - You only have three votes. The first vote will be 3 points, the second vote 2 points, and your last vote will be 1 point. We will count all these points per person. The three poets with the most points are the winners. Please, place these votes in the same post and think before you make a choice, we don’t appreciate cheaters
    - You have to vote before the given date, if you cast your vote later it doesn’t count

Well, those were the rules and now the most important part; PRIZES!

1st place - 40 sickles
2nd place - 30 sickles
3rd place - 20 sickles

No one can win the first price more than 3 times in a row. If so, SH and I will decide what to do. I hope you all understand why we do this.

The subject of this contest doesn’t exist; you are free to choose any object you like. But (you knew this was coming) you do have to write your poem in a special scheme. You can choose between number 1 and number 2;

1. a b a - b c b - c d c - d e d
2. a b c - a b c - d e f - d e f

So all the poems have to rhyme! You are allowed to make your poem longer but you have to continue the rhythm. (par example; d e d – e f e, etc)
We know this is hard to do, but not impossible. Give your best shot. (:

Please send your poem between the 5th and the 26th of September.
And you can vote between the 27th and 1st (24.00) of September.

We wish everybody good luck and lots of fun. If you have any suggestions, tips, notes or ideas; feel free to use the lovely pb-button, it’s begging to be pushed.

Charlotte (Sweet Hermione) and Marlie (Cotos).

1st poem

I really love the ''subject'' of this poetry contest. I think it's very original. I didn't really expected it, and I found it a good challenge.

In the night, an idea flew into my mind. I had to make a poem about it. Just with the 3rd stanza, I realised I actually did the rhyme sceme of the contest. The last stanza isn't in the rhyme sceme, I think, but well... I think I did well enough.

I wanted to make a poem about the longing of teenage girls for being just cute and average, and for being special, wild and rock 'n roll.
I think that we see that all the time. ''Everyone loves the rebel.''
But... no-one wants to be an outsider.
In the end, I think this poem is about that longing, but it's also a jubilation and archetyping of girls and women. Amen.

Discription

Watch! She goes
from Stars Wars light
Smoking roofs on
bars, acbite

Need! Train high
move hair aside
Blistered bricks
in thus, she might

Move! She is
phosphore attic
Treat in treating
hips in bick

Shine! Her my
planet got slick
Leaving ices
esthetic

She! So rhyme
don’t run the flee
To archetype
sink
it into me

2nd poem

I have to be honest. I, personally, hated this subject. It’s just not good for me, having to write keeping to a scheme. And such a hard one too xO I chose the scheme aba-bcb-cdc-ded, because I thought it would be easiest. The rhythm is nowhere to be seen, but hey, it’s the best I could do. Well, my poem is about people hating their lives. But I guess it’s what you make of it yourself eh?

---

Semi-happiness

You’re incredible, but not unbeatable,
The immortal you, does not exist.
So stop doing things that are not repeatable.

Before turning into the one who is missed,
Cry some more and feel brand new.
Then turn back, into the one I once kissed.

When your ego blocks my view,
I will break your thoughts and be polite.
Because I know, I should thank you.

Being blinded by the blinding light,
The dark feelings get less and less.
When our paper plane takes flight.

We’re on the way, to semi-happiness.

3rd poem

A different subject, a different poem. I didn’t find it very hard to do, although I could only write one of the schemes; a-b-c a-b-c d-e-f d-e-f.
My poem is about humanity and losing your grip of a certain thing/person/life.

---

Animalistic consummation

A thought, down the drain
Leisurely dipping it through
This morning bed shine

Bounded time is a restrain
The mocking bird flew
Through the jungle’s dine

Oh, sweet goddess of hate
Water is too pure
To drown my lover’s sins

I want an elephant to suffocate,
A dandelion to ensure
The flee that night brings

4th poem

This wasn't too hard for me, but it sure took me a while as my muse completely stood me up, lol. I will not tell you what the poem is about, but it's different from my other ones, i guess - it'd be great if i hear you guys's interpretation of this. Really, i wrote this poem with the intention of hearing what other people thought this was about. If someone would be really really interested, i can always tell you guys what it's about later. =)

---

The fires, still burning
hopeless sparks of hate;
the pages, still turning

.. lacking any kind of faith.
Only to abandon the sign
while I anxiously await.

Dazzling minds, shapeless line
and I think of truth
merely so divine.

And there goes youth
elegantly running away
off to a lonely phone booth.

It’s over and done,
let truth be told.
But fear, my friend, it’s only just

begun.

Dear fellow-poets,

To my deep regret no one has voted. Not the participants, neither the readers. Therefore Charlotte and I have decided that we will do the voting this time because the people who did enter need a reward. Certainly because the “subject” wasn’t easy.

For those who don’t agree with our decision; we don’t cheat, we don’t look at names and if you want a different winner you should have voted!

***

Charlotte’s votes
First vote; 2nd poem
Because: First of all: lovely. This poem fascinates me. I read your description, but I don't get it... but that's no shame.

Being blinded by the blinding light,
The dark feelings get less and less.
When our paper plane takes flight.

I think this is about - life's getting better. That's really pretty, also because of the paper plane. Paper planes are fragile,
so you can't really have confidence in life at all.

Second vote: 3rd poem
Because: Very mysterious. I think I know what you're writing about, but it's still mysterious. ^^

Oh, sweet goddess of hate
Water is too pure
To drown my lover’s sins

That's really beautiful...

Third vote: 4th poem
Because: IIs it about lost love? Or is it about the fear of getting old?
I like both ideas. I think you can see/read this poem is many kinds of ways. And plus - your word choice is really nice.

My votes
First vote; Poem 1
I just love the rhythm in your poem. It all fits together, the words, the rhyme, and the rhythm. It’s just one big thing. I also like your subject, it’s different, nothing I usually write about.

My second vote; Poem 2
I love the metaphors and the descriptions in your poem. The rhythm is indeed not the best part of your poem but that’s not really necessary, the words speak for themselves.

My third vote; Poem 4
Last but not least. I really like your ending, it looks very original. And I like it because it’s somehow abstract, in my opinion. The phone booth line is my favourite.

***

So the final top three is;
1st place; Poem 2 – Smoky
2nd place; Poem 1 – Sweet Hermione
3rd place; Poem 3 – child of the other side
3rd place; Poem 4 – Sofie

Congrationlations!
