Winners of the September contest:
First place: Smoky
Second place: Sweet Hermione
Third place: Cotos/Sofie
Hello everybody and welcome to a new English Poetry Contest!
This challenge will be organized every month, by Marlie (Child of the other side) and Charlotte (Sweet Hermione).
The idea is very simple. We decide the subject, you write the poem. (And of course, we’ll try to make an entry as well.) This can be anything that’s inspiring; another poem, a lyric, a title, a picture, a word, etc. We’ll try to vary the subject as much as possible.
Every participant has to maintain the following rules
- You are not allowed to write more than one poem per contest
- The poem must be yours
- The poem must have something to do with the subject. Please write a few words above/below your poem to tell us a little about it (just like you usually do)
- Don’t comment on other people, you can do that via the pb-button or during the voting
- Don’t make your poem too long, 5 pages about one subject is boring
- Let someone beta it. There are many beta-readers on HPF and Cotos, TONKS and SH are willing to assist people who do want to compete but are not that good in English. With the right words your poem reads a lot easier. Don’t be ashamed just pb
- You must send your poem to SH or to Cotos; you’re no longer allowed to post it by yourself
About the voting.
- Don’t vote for yourself nor before SH / Cotos give permission. If you do your vote won't count
- Explain with more then 15 words why you’ve chosen a certain poem. “I love it” won’t do
- You only have three votes. The first vote will be 3 points, the second vote 2 points, and your last vote will be 1 point. We will count all these points per person. The three poets with the most points are the winners. Please, place these votes in the same post and think before you make a choice, we don’t appreciate cheaters
- You have to vote before the given date, if you cast your vote later it doesn’t count
Well, those were the rules and now the most important part; PRIZES!
1st place - 40 sickles
2nd place - 30 sickles
3rd place - 20 sickles
No one can win the first price more than 3 times in a row. If so, SH / Cotos will decide what to do. I hope you all understand why we do this.
Since the previous subject was so immensely popular, we’ve chosen something easier this time. A very random word: winter.
You can do whatever you like (prepare for the usual speech); you can write about what feelings winter gives you: you can use the word in a sentence, as a title, etc. Any way is fine.
Please send your poem between the 5th and the 26th of October.
And you can vote between the 27th and 2nd (24.00) of November.
We wish everybody good luck and lots of fun. If you have any suggestions, tips, notes or ideas; feel free to use the lovely pb-button, it’s begging to be pushed.
Charlotte (Sweet Hermione) and Marlie (Cotos). |

1st poem:
The moment you left
When I lost you
Winter has begun
Your theft
My stolen heart
I confess, you won
A cold feeling inside
Emptiness
I’m fading away
My soul died
Living on raw emotions
Can’t find a way |

2nd poem:
This heartbeat
Going faster and faster
With the music
Of the wind
Frozen lips
Waiting for you
My breath taken away
Without words
Cold air around us
But warmth between us
A single look
A single touch
Coldness can’t touch us |

3rd poem:
A Nostalgic Winter
The whole street
covered in snow
Pure white.
No footsteps.
We go outside,
together.
Never knowing
What's coming our way
Everlasting fun
Untill the darkness comes
Coming home, dressed like a snowman
It's cold. |

4th poem:
Winter
Little hands against the window
Eyes staring wide
In your eyes the world is changing
You will explore new things and I will soon take you outside
Questions errupt, cute as they are
Where does it come from? Can I taste?
You babble non-stop, taking it in in surprise
Mummy, when I touch it, will it be erased?
I take you by the hand and lead you out
And soon white flakes crown your dark hair
You sure look like an angel, curious and sweet
Big, blue eyes twinkling as you adore and stare
Carefully you aproach the street
Crunching snow under your feet as you do
Then you run back at me, cling to me as though afraid
Don't worry my child, it's only winter greeting you |

5th poem:
Snowy portraits, overwhelming meal,
yes, all of it seems so utterly nice.
Somehow contradicting my heart of steel,
this warmth I wear only equals disguise.
Hidden in wrapping paper, dozens of presents
how could I ever desire more.
Yet I don’t like this turn of events,
makes me feel nothing but sore.
These bruises and scars aren’t fading,
unbearable coldness touches my defense.
On my mind this silence we’re trading
dreaming of future, so intense.
These black thoughts of mine, used to be a crime
but right now I know, to me it’s clear.
I guess I’ll be enjoying one more time
a not so merry Christmas and an unhappy new year. |

6th poem:
Winter has come
I walk through a white dream
An icy wind caresses my face
Softly
Slowly, it freezes my tears
It freezes my pain
I inhale the cool air
And I smile
Winter has come
To warm my heart |

7th poem:
This poem is about the affection of girl for a boy.
She was very used to him, but later, she discovered she found him attractive. But the boy already settled down.
Season’s change
Meltdown lured and stepped
out the joy. Of translated
icicles, or just the same...
Shooting paralells from nails:
blue flame – never right
When loving fails
Lady Summer takes his
legs. Chuckles in the pool
of infinity in warmth
‘Embrassez-moi, crowned cool,’
she merely breathed.
Mary Jane’s smile for death
Autumn leaves strokes a cliché-
like gingertail, she’s care
Hell, what happened to a
dancing pair? Strike in
craving, swearing
no bitter love despair. |

It's been a while since I voted but let's make a change there. I really hope this business can become a little more active again - 7 poems is at least better than 4 (I think, in the previous challenge?)! So I'm hoping many people will vote.. C'mon folks!
My first vote goes to poem number: 7
Because: Well.. 7 is my lucky/favorite number? Lol. No. I'm in love with it. This poem is just - made of win. I love 'when loving fails', ''embrassez-moi, crowned cool,' she merely breathed' and the very last words 'no bitter love despair'. I am in love yet again!
My second vote goes to poem number: 1
Because: This isn't the most complex poem with the most difficult vocabulary, but I love it anyway. Less is more.. I love the interpretation of the word Winter, not just the season but the coldness and all behind it. 'Your theft my stolen heart I confess, you won' - that part is brilliant!
My third vote goes to poem number: 4
Because: Big, fancy vocabulary. I also like the way 'Winter' is used here. Yup, lovely! 'It's only winter greeting you' is so adorable btw. Cute!
That was all! Good luck everyone =D |

Well, because there aren't many votes yet, and because I read Sweet Hermione's beg in the Nu-thread, I looked for this thread, and I love it
I haven't been here before (shame on me), but I will defenetly come here more often.
Anyway, my votes:
My first vote goes to poem 4, Winter
It is well written, and it isn't a standard poem. The story itself is also very good. I liked to read it.
My seccond vote goes to poem 3, A Nostalgic Winter
I really like the form of the poem, that's really the style I like. You've made it very nice to read. I really like the mistery in it.
my third, and last vote goes to poem 6, Winter had come
I like that it's not abab, if you know what I mean. They style is lovely, and I really like the Winter has come.. To warm my heart at the end. Keep up the good work! |
