Hello everybody and welcome to a new English Poetry Contest!
This challenge will be organized every month, by Marlie (Child of the other side) and Charlotte (Sweet Hermione).
The idea is very simple. We decide the subject, you write the poem. (And of course, we’ll try to make an entry as well.) This can be anything that’s inspiring; another poem, a lyric, a title, a picture, a word, etc. We’ll try to vary the subject as much as possible.
Every participant has to maintain the following rules:
- You are not allowed to write more than one poem per contest
- The poem must be yours
- The poem must have something to do with the subject. Please write a few words above/below your poem to tell us a little about it (just like you usually do)
- Don’t comment on other people, you can do that via the pb-button or during the voting
- Don’t make your poem too long, 5 pages about one subject is boring
- Let someone beta it. There are many beta-readers on HPF and Cotos, TONKS and SH are willing to assist people who do want to compete but are not that good in English. With the right words your poem reads a lot easier. Don’t be ashamed just pb
- You must send your poem to SH or to Cotos; you’re no longer allowed to post it by yourself
About the voting:
- Don’t vote for yourself nor before SH / Cotos give permission. If you do your vote won't count
- Explain with more then 15 words why you’ve chosen a certain poem. “I love it” won’t do
- You only have three votes. The first vote will be 3 points, the second vote 2 points, and your last vote will be 1 point. We will count all these points per person. The three poets with the most points are the winners. Please, place these votes in the same post and think before you make a choice, we don’t appreciate cheaters
- You have to vote before the given date, if you cast your vote later it doesn’t count
Well, those were the rules and now the most important part; PRIZES!
1st place - 40 sickles
2nd place - 30 sickles
3rd place - 20 sickles
No one can win the first price more than 3 times in a row. If so, SH / Cotos will decide what to do. I hope you all understand why we do this.
The subject of this month is a very nice one (ha! yeah I bet you will agree!) because it's very broad: pick a song you like and write a poem about it. Write about the lyrics, the music, the title, the feeling you get, your memories of the song, whatever you like. You have to mention the song you used. Just place it before your poem, or something.
Please send your poem between the 4th and the 24th of March.
And you can vote between the 24th and 31thth (24.00) of March.
We wish everybody good luck and lots of fun. If you have any suggestions, tips, notes or ideas; feel free to use the lovely pb-button, it’s begging to be pushed.
Charlotte (Sweet Hermione) and Marlie (Cotos). |

1st poem
Here's my poem for the EPC. I got my ispiration from the song Creep - Radiohead.
Here's the lyric:
When you were here before
Couldn't look you in the eye
You're just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry
You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
I wish I was special
You're so verappeltaarte special
But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here
I don't care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice when I'm not around
You're so verappeltaarte special
I wish I was special
But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell I'm doing here?
I don't belong here
She's running out again
She's running out
She runs runs runs
Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so verappeltaarte special
I wish I was special
But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here
I don't belong here
---
Here's my poem:
What have I done
they were happy
together
but I was selfish
she deserved it
all the attention
that I got
it was hers
I broke it
all of it
And now they won't talk to me
but I'm better of alone
So I can't hurt
no more
The song is about someone who feels like he/she's nothing, just a creep. I used this feeling for the poem. |

2nd poem
Read it when you listen to 9 crimes by Damien Rice.
This beautiful song inspired me to write this poem.
---
I walk on the wrong side of the road
If everyone blows with the wind, I turn my head
Everyone takes when I give
I close my eyes when you look
Everyone indicates and I hide
Sleeping units awake me
The darkness lights me
Is it alright? |

3rd poem
I thought about a lot of different songs when I read the subject of this month, because I know too many beatiful songs. Angie by The Rolling Stones, A Modern Myth by 30 Seconds To Mars, Don't Speak by No Doubt, but in the end I picked Mad About You, performed by Sting. I still think the poem contains bits and pieces from the other songs as well, but that's probably just my interpretation.
---
These words you whisper in my ear,
The promises,
You will break,
The things I will never hear.
You will leave and after years you die,
One last kiss,
And I cry,
With desperate tears I cry goodbye.
The eyes who look at me,
Who spy on me,
Don’t know,
Never know what to see.
I walk to the depths of this lie,
Leave,
From you,
And after years I will die.
I just wish I knew how long until, |

4th poem
First of all, I'd like to say I really love the subject. You can do just about anything you want, but you're still tied to the lyric you chose.
Now about my poem. I chose Who Wants To Live Forever from Queen. A pretty well-known song but it hits me everytime I listen to it. I really adore the lyrics.
When I listen to the song, a feeling of hopelessness comes over me. So while I listened to it, I wrote my poem. I hope you like it, and it's quite open so you can interpret things the way you like. The poem doesn't have a title.
---
The lives we've lived
Left long ago
Revived, relived
Precipitant yet slow
Through fleeting moments
Of flitting snow
Dreams and clearly leaving tears
Fearing, declaring despair
Chances disappearing
Through a madman's eyes
His cry for ever
Forever |

5th poem
My inspiration is from the song There for you from the band Flyleaf. I simple adore this song because I just feel like the song with one of my best friends. I think the poem speaks for itself, so here it is.
---
I always feel
Like I’ve neglected you
You’re always there
When I need you
But where am I?
My blood is running
Through my veins
Hoping for the moment
That I can be there for you
I want to be someone
You can come to
I wanna be there for you
‘cause I love you |

6th poem
I was glad this was the new subject of the EPC, though it was not easy to pick a song. I know so many nice songs and I wanted to make a poem of all of these songs. In the end, I just started and I used ''Everybody's gotta learn sometimes'' by Beck.
I can not describe what the poem is about - it is too personal.
A friend of mine read it and thought it was about a guy who's constantly watching this girl. In some way, it is true and in another way, it is not. Let's say it's just about a boy and me.
I wrote it because I just had to let it all out. It's also full of symbols and citations, like the movie ''Walk the line'' and the line ''Freedom takes a fuzz or three mesketeers teared you down as you arise.'' I'm never lying in my poems, let's just stick to that.
I haven't got a title (yet).
---
Your eyes are laying beside me
as I try to catch some sleep
in a night where everything is endless
shallow and deep
I must rest this time
Your hands are in a place I must
desire, like butterflies and scratches
on my skin would take it all away
come undone as I obey
Narrowing my veins as well
Your gazes were useless, for all
but once I let you slip
In this pool where we have no
cloak but names, names written
on our troubled dreams
Your lips had no work as you enrich
when life is calling she will stitch
a dress from your tears, she's pressing
pearls out of your seriousness as well
I'm the verappeltaarte princess of this train
Your feet were talking closer, I cannot
make you dance or walk the line
Push your hands to the grounds as
you're testing the value of my craving
for I'm no joke, I'll sign
Your loving time was insecure, but in
admiration I will specialize
Freedom takes a fuzz or three
musketeers teared you down as you arise
But everbody's gotta learn sometimes |

7th poem
I really like the assignment or whatever you like to call it, this time. 'Cause what gets your poetic soul fired up more than music? Well, I wrote this poem and I got myself inspired by listening to Bold as Love by John Mayer (originally it's not his, it's Jimi Hendrix's, I think?), but then I based my poem upon Love like Winter by AFI. I've always loved the line love like winter, 'cause I love love and I love winter, and especially the last line is sort of about that.
It has no title, but I'm working on that.
---
cover me fast in poems of paperback
i'll write down my soul for you, even if i lack
a million words to tell you in a thousand ways that
the question's written where i fold
do you know the lies i've sold
to a ice-cold crowd of bright red eyes?
but only yours illuminate the cries
that creep out of the pause
hesitant in the voice of a lover
i hold you close, mouth seeks for cover
oh, those ruby eyes that ruby shine
wrap your heart around the warmth i've missed
i'd forsake the blue lips of those softly kissed
"you never know, you know?"
words drawn from your lips
"no, for i never know"
now's the right time to exchange our whips
dress me slow in novels of old
i'll whisper the saddest story ever told
a thousand words to tell you in a million ways that
the answer's revealed as i unfold
slow and gently, shivering, into your hands of cold. |

Thanks for all the poems! We're very happy there are so many! We hope you will give us a lot of votes too. ^^
Now it's voting time!
About the voting
- Use more than 15 words to explain why you've chosen a certain poem. "I love it" won't do
- You only have three votes. The first vote will be 3 points, the second vote 2 points, and your last vote will be 1 point. We will count all these points per person. The three poets with the most points are the winners. Please, place these votes in the same post and think before you make a choice, we don't appreciate cheaters
- You have to vote before the given date, if you cast your vote later it doesn't count
How to vote
My first/second/third vote goes to poem number:
Because:

My first vote goes to poem number: 6
Because: I was really impressed by the rhyme scheme this poem has. I myself suck at rhyme schemes so I really envy people who can work with them so well as in this particular poem. I also like the words you used to describe the whole thing, it's really poetic.
My second vote goes to poem number: 2
Because: Well first of all I can just feel the same atmoshpere as I feel when I'm listening to 9 crimes, so that's really awesome. I'm also totally in love with the sentence 'If everyone blows with the wind, I turn my head'. It really captures the mood. Well done ^^
My third vote goes to poem number: 7
Because: Again a poem of which I adore both the rhyme scheme and the vocabulary. I also like the way you didn't use any capitals. It gives the poem some extra sort of... I don't know, flavour to it, or something. Anyway, really good job (: |

My first vote goes to the 7th poem: Beautiful words, honestly. The way you use words is quite extraordinary! "a million words to tell you in a thousand ways", a beautiful sentence. I also like that you twisted that sentence in the last stanza. Chapeau!
My second vote goes to the 3rd poem: I like the structure in this poem: a long sentence, short, short, long sentence. You describes the sadness very well. I also like that the open ending, that makes it seem like you're to emotional to continue or something..(or is that just me..xD)
And my last vote goes to the 6th poem: I like the symbolism and metaphors in this poem. It's so full of emotion and life.. it's great.
Really hard choice, this month!
Love, Loesje. |

Last day, last chances. And yes, I will vote as well. ^^ *goodies*
My first vote goes to poem number; 6
Because; it took me by suprise. It's been a while since I've seen a long poem that's this good. I won't say it's the best, because I had a hard time deciding what poem to pick, but it's very good. I don't think I get the whole poem but I love the last line. And the 4th stanza is wonderful!
My second vote goes to poem number; 4
Short but pretty. It doesn't immediately remind me of the song but it's pretty none the less. I also like the form; you end with a last word. One last word that's very important. (Or as my teacher would say; a final statement.)
My third vote goes to poem number; 7
Again, it was hard for me to decide which poem to pick. Your poem was as good as the others so don't feel insulted by getting my third vote. (:
Somehow, your poem reminded me of Romea&Julia, especially the stanza where you have spoken lines. The poem is sad and romantic, a common combination but it appeals me, so ... well done. |
